Popular actor Govardhan Asrani passed away on October 20th. He was 84 years old. According to media reports, Asrani had been hospitalized for four days due to fluid accumulation in his lungs, which led to his death. 

His last rites were performed at the Shantinagar crematorium in Santacruz. His sudden passing has sent shockwaves through the industry. Just hours before his death, he had wished his fans a Happy Diwali on social media.

Who was Asrani?

Govardhan Asrani was born in Jaipur, Rajasthan. He appeared in over 350 films in a career spanning over five decades. Govardhan began his film career in 1970. 

However, he gained real recognition with the film "Mere Apne." Asrani won the hearts of audiences by playing the eccentric jailer in the 1975 classic "Sholay." 

Although his screen time was limited, his performance, especially his dialogue "Hum Angrez ke zameen ke jailer hain," became memorable. 

He worked as a character actor and comic actor in the most Hindi films within a decade, appearing in 101 films in the 1970s and 107 in the 1980s. 

In addition to films, he also found equal acclaim on television, particularly for his role as Narada in Doordarshan's 1985 serial "Natkhat Narada."

Asrani was a fixture in Hindi cinema, especially in the 1970s and 1980s. His comic timing, especially his performances, made him a favorite of directors like Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Basu Chatterjee, BR Chopra, and KR Rao. 

He also ushered in the next generation of comedy in the 2000s, working with filmmakers like David Dhawan and Priyadarshan. 

He starred in hit films like "Hera Pheri," "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar," and "Gharwali Baharwali." He won the Filmfare Award for Best Comic Actor for both "Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar" and "Balika Vadhu."
