Story of Govardhan Puja
According to the Srimad Bhagavatam, when Lord Krishna was a child, the people of Gokul worshipped Lord Indra, hoping for good rains. Upon learning of this, Lord Krishna told everyone, "It's Indra's job to bring rain. Mount Govardhan provides for our cows, so we should worship it."
Everyone then obeyed Lord Krishna and worshipped Mount Govardhan. Seeing this, Lord Indra became enraged and began pouring downpours on Gokul.
To save everyone, Lord Krishna lifted Mount Govardhan on his finger, saving all the villagers.
When Lord Krishna held Mount Govardhan on his finger for seven days, Indra realized that Lord Krishna was no ordinary human being but an incarnation of Lord Vishnu himself. Indra then apologized to Lord Krishna, beginning the tradition of worshipping Govardhan, which continues to this day.
