Gig workers have been in the news across the country for several days. This is because they were initially scheduled to go on strike on the evening of December 31st . However , the companies accepted their demands, which is why they did not go on strike.

Now, the central government has also issued draft social security rules for gig workers. Raghav Chadha has called this an important step towards giving gig workers "recognition, protection, and respect."

Raghav Chadha praised the central government for releasing draft social security rules for gig workers under the new labor code . He said this is the first step towards giving "recognition, protection , and respect " to their hard work.

The Ministry of Labour and Employment earlier this week reportedly released draft rules titled the Code on Social Security (Central) Rules, 2025, which outline the criteria for gig workers to be eligible for various social security benefits and safeguards.

What did Raghav Chadha say about gig workers ?

Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha wrote on the social media platform X , "Congratulations to all gig workers and delivery partners. This is good news for you. The central government's draft social security rules are the first step towards recognizing, protecting, and respecting your work.

Even if the platforms ( Zomato, Swiggy, Blinkit, etc.) didn't listen to you, the people and government of this country did. This is a small victory, but an important one."

Raghav Chadha has long advocated for the rights of gig workers , even speaking about them in Parliament several times. In a video posted on X, he said , "

These draft rules were n't just made because I raised this issue in Parliament, but because all of you also raised your voices. The companies and platforms didn't listen to you, but the government did, which is to be welcomed."

Raghav had kept the matter in Parliament

Chadha said that under the new rules, gig workers will be legally recognized and given a unique identity. In a recent Parliament session, the AAP Rajya Sabha member spoke about the “pain and suffering” of India’s gig workers, who work under extreme pressure and sometimes in extreme weather conditions.
