Diwali 2025: 3 ways to identify whether green crackers are real or fake?
How to Identify Diwali Green Crackers: This Diwali, many states only allow the bursting of green crackers. So, before shopping for Diwali crackers, learn what green crackers are and how to easily identify them.

How to Identify Real Green Crackers: Every year, with the arrival of Diwali, the entire sky is illuminated with light. Colorful fireworks bring joy, but within moments, that joy is replaced by smoke and pollution.
The smoke and loud noise from firecrackers not only pollute the air but also negatively impact people's health. This is why firecrackers are banned in many states.
However, in some states, the government has found a solution: green firecrackers, which produce less pollution and are considered safer for the environment.
This year, the Supreme Court has allowed the use of green firecrackers in Delhi, but only under established rules. This begs the question: what exactly are these green firecrackers, and how can we identify them? Learn more.
What are green crackers?
Simply put, green crackers produce much less smoke and noise than normal crackers. They have been manufactured by CSIR-NEERI (National Environmental Engineering Research Institute). These crackers do not contain chemicals that release toxic gases into the air.
While normal crackers produce noise up to 160 decibels, the sound of green crackers is only between 110 to 125 decibels. This means less impact on the ears and the environment.
These crackers also contain dust repellent, which after burning, attracts the surrounding dust. Meaning, they not only make less noise but also reduce the smoke spreading in the air.
How many types of green crackers are there?
There are three types of green crackers-
SWAS: When burned, they release very fine water droplets, which absorb dust present in the air.
SAFAL (Successful): The amount of aluminium in these is maintained to reduce noise and improve impact.
STAR: These contain neither sulphur nor potassium nitrate, hence they emit very little smoke.
How to identify genuine green crackers?
Fake green firecrackers are plentiful in the market during Diwali. Therefore, be sure to check a few things before purchasing them:
Look for the CSIR-NEERI logo: Every genuine green firecracker has the green CSIR-NEERI logo printed on the packaging. If this logo is not visible, the firecracker is not genuine.
Scan the QR code: Green firecracker packets have a QR code. You can scan this with your mobile camera or the CSIR-NEERI Green Cracker Verification App.
Scanning will reveal complete information about the firecracker, such as its chemicals and pollution potential. If the code doesn't scan or appears to be fake, avoid the packet.
Pay attention to the packaging: Authentic green crackers are sturdy and clear. They clearly state "Green Cracker" or "NEERI Approved," along with the company name and weight.
Don't forget to get a bill: Genuine shopkeepers will always provide a bill. This will also allow you to file a complaint if necessary.
Why is it important to identify genuine green firecrackers?
The Supreme Court has only permitted the burning of green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR from October 18th to 20th. Fake or counterfeit firecrackers not only violate regulations but also contribute to air pollution, particularly affecting children, the elderly, and asthma patients.
What is the punishment for selling or bursting wrong firecrackers?
- Selling or storing non-green crackers – fine up to Rs 5000 or imprisonment up to 3 years.
- Bursting of wrong crackers: Rs 200 fine or 6 months imprisonment.
- Repeat offenders can also be fined an additional Rs 5,000 per day.
- The police and the environment department are conducting strict checks at this time, so caution is the best advice.
